White Roofs – 20 percent reduction in energy

WHITE ROOFS You heard Secretary Chu mention it at a Nobel Forum and on the Daily Show. California Energy Commissioner Art Rosenfeld, says it is the easiest way to save 24 billion metric tons of carbon; wow that’s a better than if we all switched to a Prius or even like turning off the planet for a whole year. Ok lets not hit the extremes but hopefully I have your curiosity now.

White Roofs can lead to 20 percent reductions or more of a homes air-conditioning costs. So what is a White Roof? What does science say?

While reducing radiant heat load with a white roof is a good idea, there are other ways to receive a similar benefit that are not as costly, especially if your roof is in good shape or if there are ascetic concerns. Closed cell insulation foam applied to the roof will keep solar heat out of attic spaces quite well. Also, radiant barriers do a fair job for much less money.
