Driving Demand for High Performance Homes with Data—12/7/17

Presenter

  • Debra Little

246310386

Data is essential for driving demand for high performance homes. But today, the lack of its accessibility impedes its potential.

Home performance contractors are creating a wealth of information based on actual field experience, but until recently they’ve had few tools to facilitate the tracking and exchange of this data so it’s been underutilized.

What kinds of data? While energy consumption data as documented in utility records is a proof of performance, we also need to understand what measures were installed that resulted in the energy savings; what’s working and why in energy upgrade projects.

There’s good news in that networks and new tools are being developed to facilitate these connections. This webinar will introduce these with a focus on applications to three of many segments that can benefit from increased access to data:

1. Home performance contractors/experts

2. Real estate appraisers, agents and lenders in valuation and sales of high performing homes

3. Investors, policy designers and others who advocate for energy efficiency as a resource

With increased data flow and exchange we can more efficiently learn from our collective experience, be guided by success stories, increase profits and better resonate with homeowners to motivate their actions and drive demand.

Time to Tame the Building Science Education Wild West Show—11/29/17

Currently there is no framework for establishing core competencies across broad building science skills for all workforce classifications involved in both residential and commercial buildings. As a result, building science is not effectively integrated in professional education. Some might call it a ‘Wild West Show.’ That’s where DOE’s Guidelines for Building Science Education (GBSE) come in. Based on input from several expert meetings, guidelines have been developed for more than thirty different workforce classifications. Each of these guidelines provides a specific competency profile across a consistent set of building science skills. Now we need industry to embrace these guidelines and use them as a consistent framework for preparing text books, curriculum, class notes, testing, licensing, and certification requirements. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the GBSE’s, how to initiate a collective impact process to embrace this new framework, how DOE plans to build an invaluable buildings community resource for building science education tied to these guidelines, and how they fit in the broader DOE Building Science Education initiative. After all, building science principles are only critical to determining whether buildings will work or fail.

The Energy Efficiency Workforce: Business Concern, Political Asset—10/31/17

One thing that all Americans agree on is the need for more jobs, especially jobs with opportunities for "middle skill" workers and realistic pathways to long-term career success. The energy efficiency industry offers such jobs: in significant numbers and in every state. In fact, more than 2.2 million Americans work in our industry, and the number is growing.

Shining a light on the size and demographics of the EE industry can be a powerful tool for advancing the industry's policy positions in Congress and in state legislatures, as demonstrated by the current "Faces of EE" campaign and other initiatives. The people of EE are an exceptional industry asset, if highlighted correctly for maximum political impact.

Sustaining a strong workforce, however, is not an easy job, as many energy efficiency firms have learned. The task requires continuous innovation in outreach, recruitment, retention, and diversification. Successful businesses and industry associations must establish deep partnerships with education and job training institutions at all levels, from K-12 through graduate school.

Workforce and organizational development consultant Kevin Doyle will share his expertise from working with national energy efficiency labor market experts, industry advocates, business owners with workforce successes, and line workers with personal stories. The webinar will give you a chance to learn from this experience and share your ideas on how our industry can strengthen its workforce and use that strength to promote our industry.

Energy Efficiency Programs: A Subsidy or a Resource?—09/20/17

Participants will learn about the implications for valuing energy efficiency as a resource and about how their businesses may benefit from this change of perspective.

How to Meet Your Customer’s Demand for Healthy Homes —01/31/17

The New Year often ushers in thoughts of “getting healthy.” In addition to doing extra sit-ups and eating more spinach, homeowners today are also contemplating getting their homes “in shape” and healthy as well. Perhaps they have a problem with mold from a poorly ventilated shower (According to the EPA all molds have the potential to cause health effects – including producing allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks) Or they may be getting air infiltration from a contaminated attic or crawlspace (Over 80% of the air we breathe in our homes comes in from attics, crawlspace and garages.) And what about the years of filth and dust that has accumulated in their leaky air ducts? (Duct leakage is a major contributor to contaminated air entering the home.) Panelist Ken Summers, VP of Training for Comfort Institute, has more than 30 years of expertise in analyzing, diagnosing and SOLVING a plethora of home performance “health” issues. He will share with attendees specific strategies they can use to help solve customer’s home performance challenges and requests for a healthy home. Participants will also learn more about how duct sealing can single handedly eliminate many IAQ issues.

Healthy Homes: Introducing the Healthy Home Evaluator Credential —11/04/16

From identifying asthma triggers to evaluating the risk of lead poisoning and other health hazards, tremendous opportunity exists to incorporate healthy home measures into whole house home performance assessments. Demand is building for a national Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE) credential. Public health programs across the country and private consumers are calling for preventative home health assessments, with costs covered by public benefit funds and health insurers. BPI and the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative-together with a broad team of subject matter experts-introduced the HHE certification to the industry in April 2016 to meet these demands, with the goal of breaking the link between unhealthy housing and unhealthy families through home performance interventions. By attending this session, participants will: 1. Learn about growing market demand for the HHE credential in both the public sphere and private marketplace 2. Understand the scope of the HHE credential, including the HHE's job task analysis, certification blueprint and functional descriptions 3. Understand how the HHE credential can meet training needs in the Weatherization Plus Health initiative, including finding Wx funds to cover training and testing
